Ha Patela pre school

In the year 2006 we wrote:

Nestled in the Malealea valley in the south west of Lesotho is the small village of Ha Patela, a group of parents are busy collecting money to start a pre school for their children to be educated. The leader of the group is M’e Manako, here to see on the photograph, in the village. (click on photograph to enlarge)

The village is only accessible by foot or on horseback. There are no shops, schools or other facilities, which are seen as normal in more accessible areas. Children, who can follow basic secondary schooling, have to walk to school everyday in the next valley. This is impossible for the smallest among them, which is why the parents want to start a pre school in their own village.

The community has reserved a plot and are busy getting the building materials for the school; they also found someone in the community to be trained to work in the school. Now the money is necessary to realize the school, they want to use bricks and mortar rather then mud so it will be stronger and last longer. They will also make it waterproof. Money is also needed to train the teacher, for the books and other materials needed to conduct lessons.

The total costs for building and the first teaching materials will be about ZAR 30.000. Additional funds are needed for the 'teach the teacher' program and her salary.

And now?

Currently the building of the school is finished and the children of Ha Patela can attend school. We can now focus on seeing this school and the other schools in Malealea can function properly.
