Learning Circles

Picture a valley with approximately 15 communities with an average number of inhabitants of 250. A large number of the people in these communities are illiterate, and numaracy skills are low. The gap to work, enterprise, or government departments is very large. Most people in the communities spend their time herding cattle and tending the fields.

Overview of the valley

This area is a popular tourist location and the local people aim to share the profit made from tourism with the people of the valley. This in turn stimulates them to improve their own situation.

By helping such communities to think about what it is they need to improve their quality of life, and help them to achieve it, two goals are met in the same time. Firstly the community gains what it needs such as constant water supply, pre schools and sanitary facilities. Secondly they learn to read, write and improve their numeracy skills - this is due to the budgets that need to be prepared, the letters that need to be written and the plans that are made for the improvements to be achieved. As soon as a project is finished a new goal will be chosen.

The facilitators are sent out by the Trustfund. In order to keep their work going a paid coordinator is needed. We would like to sponsor the salary needed wich is a monthly sum of R1300 ( about € 125,-).

In this way we can contribute to a sustainable support that makes sure that people can do what they think is needed.
